 Interpreter License Update

The Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is eternally grateful to Colleen Keating for her tireless efforts to get SB255, also known as the Interpreter Licensure Bill, passed through the Legislature during the 2003 Legislative session. It was passed in the Senate but did not make it in the Assembly. Colleen made a number of presentations to various communities in Wisconsin, including participants at the Wisconsin RID Conference and the Wisconsin Association of the Deaf’s Board.

This bill galvanized the Deaf Community to be united in what they wanted in the bill and for interpreter standards. The efforts will not go unnoticed, as this bill will continue onto the next session and sessions after that until it is passed. The Council also thanks Sarah Benton who served on the Council for a number of years for building momentum and a support base for this bill. Colleen undertook this endeavor when Sarah had to move out of state last summer. Once again, the Council gives both Sarah and Colleen a standing ovation of thanks!
